add functionality for dealing with alternative map projections
I was working on georeferencing a map of the Arctic and surrounding regions done in an azimuthal projection, but attempting to fit it to the OSM/MapQuest cylindrical projection simply did not work out. Also, a means of adding notes about a map might be nice too as there was no way to flag or otherwise indicate a (currently) un-georeferenceable map.

This does not only effect polar maps. I've encountered problems with maps covering large areas (continents), due to projection differences. (Perhaps related, there may be issues with maps straddling longitude 180.)
