Provide a way to mark lat/long grids.
Many maps have grid lines drawn on them. There should be an easy way to mark where two lines cross and specify the lat/long of that point to georeference it. On some maps, just marking all the grid points would be all that is needed, and would be much easier than matching up map features. Some maps (especially older ones) might have inaccurate lines and need corrections from there, but using the lines would still be a big help to get them started. I've also seen a couple maps where the grid lines were almost the only usable details.

allow for input coordinates directly
sometimes maps have pass marks, it would be nice to allow for direct input of coordinates
12 votesThank you for your idea, it would be a nice feature and we are going to discuss internally.

Add number (or name) to every single map I have edited.
For better overview.
6 votesThere is a possibility to rename a map. Can you please specify, what you mean by “add number”?

Import PDF + Grid lines
I'm used to georeferencing dozens of approach plates for aviation, which means it would be awesome to import them directly in PDF at a given DPI. Most of the charts come with the lat and lon marks so, instead of placing points, it would be faster to simple position 2 latitude lines for top and bottom and 2 longitud lines for left and right sides.
3 votesThank you for your post, we are discussing the possible implementation of the “grid line” feature.

Real Time Control Point Accuracy Feedback
Most times I am Georeferencing I wonder, is the control point I'm about to add accurate. It would be wonderful to be able to instantly see if it was after I add it. Three specific suggestions.
In the Coordinates Pane, prominently show an Average Error score. That way after a point is added you can see if the score goes up or down.
In the Transformation tab of the pane show an Average Error score foe each of the transformation types you can select. That way you know which one is best to select.
If you add a Control Point…
3 votesThis is a great idea, we will definitely consider implementing this feature, but it is not a priority at this moment.
Thank you. -

enable base map to be rotated
The rotation of source map introduced in version 4 is great, however it does not solve an imprtant issue. A lot of historical maps and plans (like cities from old sketches) have landmarks drawn. When such map is NOT oriented to the North, then after rotating the base map, it does not look good. It would be great, if there would be a possibility to rotate also the base map (openstreetmap, google maps, satelite view, etc)

targetted URLs
request for a URL that would present the base map in a specific area/zoom. Any maps allied to the area then chosen manually by the surfer.
see http://osgr.mister.red - I will add links to any useful website where targetted URLs can be generated from OSGR/LatLong. (or from selected website URLs with implied geo data).
1 voteThank you for your idea. Unfortunately, we are not planning to implement it in the near future.

book map parts together like puzzle pieces
The ability to add parts of book map together like a puzzle on one map. (like Christopher Colles's book map of 1798). Presently I believe you can only compare maps by clicking on them separately.
1 voteThank you for your idea, we are not planning to implement this ability in the near future.

Allow digitizing points, lines & polygons
It would be great to permit digitizing/tracing of point, polyline, and polygon geometries once a map is georectified, then saving them. Old maps are the best source for approximate locations of places that no longer exist or have changed names. And they are virtually the only source for approximate locations of roads, rail, former river courses. With this feature, Georeferencer could fully support "historical mapathons," which will add a great volume to the historical geodata commons. Points would be highest priority, followed by lines and polygons.

Coordinates Sidebar on Side by Side and Overlay Layouts
It would be amazing to see the coordinates as you add control points so you can keep track of how accurately you are doing so.
Recommended UX would be to get rid of the coordinates tab and integrate the coordinates pane into the Side by Side and Overlay layouts. Clicking on a Coordinates icon would slide out the pane in the same manner that the other maps pane slides out.

3D view of georeferenced map (with digital elevation)
Support for digital elevation models.
It would be great to end up with a georeferenced old map overlaid on top of an accurate digital elevation. You can see an example of this here - https://www.davidrumsey.com/view/georeferencer
1 voteThank you for your idea, we are thinking about digital elevation models and possible implementation.
But for now, this is not the priority feature. -
Change Original File Location or name
Sometimes, the original file location and/or name and/or extension changes. It would be nice to alter this metadata on georeferencer.org
1 voteWe are planning to implement this possibility in one of the next udpates.

add support for MrSID images from LoC
Jpeg2000 from Library of congrass works fine - could you add MrSID support as well?
